- Assign Copilot a role
Starting a prompt with "Acting as an experienced [role]..." frames the response in the voice and perspective most useful for the task. "Acting as an experienced sales coach, review this call transcript and identify the three moments where the discovery could have gone deeper" produces a more useful response than "Review this call transcript."
- Iterate rather than restart
Microsoft's guidance on effective prompting recommends refining prompts based on the previous response rather than starting over when the first output isn't quite right. - Use memory and custom instructions

Setting preferences once, such as default tone, preferred output format, or role context, means you don't have to include those instructions in every prompt. A simple setup like "Always respond with short paragraphs, not bullet points, unless I specifically ask" applies across all subsequent interactions without further effort.

The framework is consistent across Copilot, but the most effective prompts are tailored to what each application does best.
Microsoft's research found that users were able to get caught up on a missed meeting nearly four times faster with Copilot, and 85% reported getting to a good first draft faster, with the biggest gains coming from tasks that benefit most from structured, specific prompting.
